A researcher at the University of Toronto published findings in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggesting that one specific type of morning meal could influence the body's insulin sensitivity for the entire day.

His research — later explored by scientists at Lund University in Sweden — points to a compound called propionate, produced by gut bacteria when fed slow-fermenting fiber at breakfast. Research suggests this compound may travel to the liver and help support healthy blood sugar responses to every meal that follows. This five-minute, inexpensive morning approach has since been referenced in research connected to Harvard, Mayo Clinic, Yale, Johns Hopkins, and Stanford.
